Submitting video: Acceptable Formats
(In order of preference)
- MiniDV tape
- This is the most desirable format. MiniDV tape is not
compressed and is universally compatible from tape deck to
tape deck. It is also most common for editors to export to.
Picture quality also does not suffer as the video image is
uncompressed and pure digital.
- DVD video disk
- With the advent of DVD burners and home editing, these
are now more available and seem to work out well. The
downside is that if you burn a DVD video disk on a MAC it is
not always playable on home DVD players and thus it has been
our experience that some submitted disks are not useable. We
have had very good results with DVD video disks created on
PC's. Also keep in mind that DVD video disks are compressed
video so the image quality (depending on the author's
settings) is substantially reduced.
- DVD and CD data disks
- We can accept video files on disk (CD or DVD) provided
the image settings meet the following requirements;
- AVI, Quicktime, or MPEG4 are
acceptable formats. AVI is preferred.
- Minimum of 640 pixels wide by 480
pixels high. (larger is ok)
- 30 frames per second (to be technical, it's
29.9 but we'll take either)
- Uncompressed (or slight compression is ok,
but too much compression looks bad)
- VHS tape
- The absolute worst option, but still an option if you
have nothing else. The quality is not up to the
industry standard and we want you to look as good
as possible. We can 'sweeten' your demo reel to try to improve on the VHS quality, but we
strongly recommend obtaining higher quality source material.
All in all, if you don't have a great quality reel or if you are
just not happy with what you have, we want you looking as good as
possible. Talk to us about re-editing your reel. We
frequently rebuild reels using higher quality source material, etc.
It is more affordable than you think and a drop in the bucket for
your career. Making you look as good as possible is our goal. It's
what we do. Let us help you!
